Day 24: March Basketball Two

2026-03-02

Limited permission was granted to use photos taken for these events on this site.

Hello! This is part of a one-week series showcasing my basketball sports photo work. This isn't officially part of the US's college basketball March Madness tournament, though.

Instead, these are photos of high school varsity boys and varsity girls basketball games. I've taken these photos to freeze motion and show the athletes while they're working. Hopefully, the basketball shots you see here show some example vantage points and angles that make for good sports photos.

I'm not going to be recommending gear or camera settings like the rest of the Internet, because I don't have the latest and greatest gear; instead, I focus on the gear I already have and make the most of it. I've been using iterations of the same kit for years now and I have experience with this bag of camera and glass lenses.

For this shot, I was just off the field and shot at eye level, looking slightly up. I used a telephoto lens that kept a sports player at the center of the scene. The net is off to the far right of the frame, and I managed to take the picture at the exact moment the ball went behind the net.

Thank you for visiting this blog! Special thanks to the newsletter subscribers; you get this photo a week before the internet does :-).

Cheers,
David
